Vietjet will install free Starlink on 120 aircraft

Vietnamese airline Vietjet has signed an agreement with Starlink, a satellite internet service developed and operated by SpaceX. The partnership provides for the launch of free high-speed Wi-Fi for passengers on flights under the Vietjet brand. The agreement was concluded on September 23 in New York.

At the first stage, 120 aircraft of the airline will be equipped with Starlink hardware. These include 100 narrow-body Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 aircraft, as well as 20 wide-body Airbus A330s. In the future, satellite internet is also planned to be installed on new aircraft entering Vietjet’s fleet. Thus, the service is expected to gradually cover the carrier’s domestic and international route network.

For passengers, access to Wi-Fi will be free. Thanks to the Starlink satellite system, the internet should remain available, including during flights over the ocean and remote territories. Passengers will be able to use the connection for work, communication, watching online content, and other familiar internet services.

Starlink uses a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, which makes it possible to provide high data transmission speeds and relatively low signal latency. For aviation, such technology makes it possible to maintain connectivity on routes where the use of ground communications infrastructure is impossible. In addition to the airline itself, Galaxy Holdings and Galaxy Telecom are participating in the agreement. Vietjet views the implementation of Starlink as part of the further digitalization of its air transport operations.

At the same time, specific dates for the start of providing Wi-Fi to passengers have not yet been announced: the company reported the first stage of installing equipment on 120 aircraft, but did not name the timeframe for completing the fleet’s outfitting.
