Da Nang is tightening control over cigarette butts on beaches
In Da Nang, authorities are tightening control over compliance with cleanliness rules on beaches after residents complained about large numbers of cigarette butts in the sand. The problem is especially often noted at My Khe Beach, one of the city’s most popular tourist spots.
Since July, a pilot project to monitor littering on beaches has been in effect in the Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son districts. It will continue until September 30 and covers the coastal area from the Temple project area to Sao Bien Beach.
Under the project, throwing a cigarette butt in an unauthorized place may result in a warning or a fine of 50,000 to 100,000 dong. For household waste, the fine ranges from 100,000 to 200,000 dong, and for relieving oneself in an unauthorized place, from 200,000 to 300,000 dong.
The cigarette butt problem is not limited to My Khe. According to local residents and the media, they can also be seen in the sand on other popular beaches in Da Nang, including Sao Bien, near the end of Ho Xuan Huong Street, and at T20 Beach. Residents note that cigarette butts spoil the appearance of the coastline and create problems for maintaining cleanliness.
Following the complaints received, Da Nang’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism instructed the Management Board of the Son Tra Peninsula and Tourist Beaches to strengthen inspections. Plans include increasing the number of patrols, installing additional warning signs and information boards, setting up suitable places for waste collection, and more frequently reminding beachgoers of the need to follow cleanliness rules.
The authorities are also considering the possibility of designating special smoking areas or introducing additional restrictions on smoking in public beach zones. However, a separate new fine specifically for smoking on the beach has not yet been introduced. At present, the focus is on enforcing the existing waste disposal rules.
After the pilot project is completed, the authorities will evaluate its results and decide whether to extend similar measures to all beaches in Da Nang. For now, beachgoers should keep the current rules in mind: a cigarette butt thrown into the sand may be grounds for a warning or a fine of up to 100,000 dong.
