Russia and Vietnam agreed to increase the number of flights
Russia and Vietnam have agreed to significantly expand air service opportunities between the countries. On September 25, the aviation authorities of the two states signed a memorandum of understanding in Hanoi, according to which the designated carriers of each side will be able to operate up to 105 flights per week. Thus, in total, the agreement allows for up to 210 flights between the two countries weekly.
At present, the actual number of flights is significantly below the established limit. Four Russian airlines operate flights to Vietnam on 11 routes with a total frequency of 39 flights per week. On the Vietnamese side, two carriers operate 31 flights per week on 13 routes.
The parties also intend to expand the geography of direct flights. In particular, the development of flights to Vietnam from Kazan, Barnaul, Novokuznetsk, and Blagoveshchensk is being considered. At the same time, the new memorandum establishes opportunities to increase frequency and the route network, but does not mean that all 105 permitted flights will be launched immediately. Specific dates for the introduction of new routes have not yet been announced.
The expansion of air service is taking place against the backdrop of rapid growth in passenger traffic between Russia and Vietnam. In 2025, Russian airlines alone carried more than 664 thousand passengers between the countries. In the first seven months of 2026, Russian and Vietnamese carriers together had already served 1.07 million passengers.
According to the Vietnamese side, by the end of 2026 passenger traffic between the countries may exceed 2 million people. If this figure is reached, it will become a record for the entire history of air service between Russia and Vietnam.
For travelers, the new agreement primarily creates the possibility of more direct flights and new departure cities. However, the actual increase in the number of flights will depend on airlines’ decisions and their launch of specific flight programs.
