Raids in Vietnam: what foreigners need to know
Vietnam continues a large-scale anti-drug campaign, against the backdrop of which checks of foreigners’ places of residence and stay have intensified in tourist cities.
In 2026, the Vietnamese authorities intensified the national anti-drug campaign. The government instructed law enforcement agencies to more actively detect illegal drug trafficking and use, as well as to conduct inspections and monitoring as part of the program to create drug-free areas.
Inspections are already being carried out in popular tourist destinations. In Nha Trang, the police separately reported increased drug testing, including among foreign nationals. In Da Nang, measures to detect drug-related violations are also being intensified.
During such operations, law enforcement officers may check documents and residence registration information. If a person is in a place where an inspection is being conducted, they may also be asked to undergo testing for the presence of narcotic substances. Similar checks may take place not only in establishments but also in private residential premises.
For foreigners, the main thing to understand is that an inspection itself does not mean a violation of the law. If a person is in Vietnam legally and complies with local rules, increased control in itself does not impose new migration obligations on them.
At the same time, the consequences of detecting a violation can be serious. Since July 1, 2026, an updated Law on Drug Prevention and Control has been in force, which has significantly changed the legal system in this area. Therefore, it is especially important now for foreigners in Vietnam to comply with migration requirements and the country’s laws. During an inspection, it is advisable to calmly present the necessary documents and comply with the lawful demands of law enforcement officers.
