In Hanoi, they will begin testing autonomous buses and robotaxis
In Hanoi, controlled trials of an autonomous transport system have been officially authorized. The city authorities’ decision provides for the launch of a 24-month project by Phenikaa-X in the Hoa Lac area.
As part of the project, four types of autonomous devices will be tested: driverless buses, robotaxis, cleaning robots, and delivery robots. The transport is equipped with LiDAR, cameras, high-precision digital maps, GPS, and artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms.
In the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park, robotaxis and delivery robots will operate on routes with a total length of about 11.5 km. Robotaxis will transport passengers on demand, while delivery robots will deliver food from restaurants and cafes to buildings and offices.
On the territory of the Hoa Lac campus of Vietnam National University, driverless buses will be tested on a route about 2.8 km long. They are intended to provide transportation for students between dormitories, academic buildings, the military training area, and the bus stop.
The trials will take place under strictly limited conditions. The maximum speed of the transport will be 40 km/h, and operation will be permitted mainly during daytime hours — from 9:00 to 16:30. In heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, dense fog, or flooding, the trials must be suspended.
At the testing stage, commercial transportation is not предусмотрено: passengers will not be transported for a fee. For each route, requirements have been established for the technical condition of the transport, software, insurance, emergency stopping, rescue measures, and remote control.
The project is designed to collect data on the operation of sensors, cameras, LiDAR, radars, and digital maps, as well as on situations requiring operator intervention. The results obtained are planned to be used for further improvement of the technologies and the development of requirements for autonomous transport in Vietnam.
