In Haiphong, a Chinese citizen was detained on suspicion of robbing a store
Hai Phong city police detained 41-year-old Chinese citizen Zhang Peng Ju on suspicion of an armed robbery at a grocery store. According to police, the crime occurred late in the evening on August 27 on Do Nhuan Street in Hai An District.
At around 11:25 p.m., a store employee was alone at the cash register when a masked man entered. He threatened her with a knife and took money from the cash drawer before fleeing.
After receiving the robbery report, Hai An District police examined the scene, collected physical evidence, and began tracking the suspect’s movements. During the investigation, law enforcement identified him.
According to preliminary police information, Zhang arrived in Vietnam in June 2026 and spent some time in various localities. He then came to Hai Phong looking for work. Investigators say the man had no stable income and, according to him, had run out of money by the time of the crime.
Police say that before the robbery, the suspect prepared himself: he changed clothes, put on gloves, covered his face with cloth and a mask, and also took a fruit knife with him. At the store, he waited for the right moment, then threatened the employee and took large-denomination banknotes from the cash register.
After the robbery, the man left Hai Phong and tried to hide. According to police, while moving through several provinces and cities, he repeatedly changed his appearance, place of residence, and means of transport.
On September 1, law enforcement located and detained the suspect in Moc Chau District, Son La Province. During the arrest, police seized 145 million dong (about 5,500 U.S. dollars), allegedly linked to the robbery, as well as other items and documents.
According to police, at the initial stage of questioning, Zhang admitted his involvement in the crime. The investigation is ongoing, and after its completion, the case will be handled in accordance with Vietnamese law.
