Ho Chi Minh City plans free Wi‑Fi in all public spaces
By 2030, the city authorities want to provide all public spaces with free high-speed internet, while simultaneously expanding 5G coverage and beginning 6G testing.
Ho Chi Minh City has approved a smart city development plan for 2026–2030 with a vision through 2045. One of the key points of the program is the creation of a citywide digital infrastructure that should make the internet more accessible for residents and tourists. According to the plan, by 2030 free high-speed Wi-Fi should be available in 100% of Ho Chi Minh City’s public spaces. This refers to shared public areas where access to stable internet can be useful for residents, tourists, and city services.
At the same time, the authorities plan to expand 5G mobile network coverage to 95% of the population. In several key areas of the city, they also intend to begin pilot testing of 6G technology. These measures are part of a broader program of digitalization and urban infrastructure development.
The project is expected to affect more than just internet access. As part of smart city development, Ho Chi Minh City also plans to create infrastructure for real-time data collection, install sensors and intelligent cameras that will be used to monitor transport, the environment, energy, and other urban processes.
For tourists, free Wi-Fi may be especially convenient: it will be possible to connect to the internet in a greater number of public places without needing to look for a café or buy a local SIM card just for network access.
At the same time, experts remind users about the security of public networks. Before connecting, it is worth checking the name of the official access point and not entering passwords, bank card details, or other confidential information through unknown Wi-Fi networks.
