Heavy rains and a risk of flooding are expected in Central Vietnam
A period of heavy rain is expected in central Vietnam and may last until September 17. According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the rainfall will be linked to the influence of the tropical convergence zone and the development of a low-pressure area in the South China Sea.
The heaviest rainfall was forecast for September 14–17. Forecasters warned that due to changes in the system’s track and strength, the rainfall totals remained uncertain. At the same time, the combination of several weather factors increased the likelihood of heavy downpours in the central provinces.
Particular attention was recommended for areas from Nghe An to Hue, where the heaviest rainfall was expected. In some scenarios, significant amounts of rain were forecast over a short period, increasing the risk of rapid rises in river levels and temporary flooding of city streets.
Heavy rainfall may lead to flash floods on small rivers and streams, flooding in low-lying and urban areas, as well as landslides on steep slopes. In addition, thunderstorms may bring lightning, strong wind gusts, and other hazardous phenomena.
As early as September 12–13, very heavy rain was observed in central areas. According to the disaster prevention service, some places in Quang Tri and Hue received 150–300 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, while at some stations totals reached 300–480 mm. In some areas, cumulative rainfall for the period from September 10 to 14 exceeded 700 mm.
Against the backdrop of the rain, authorities also warned of possible rises in river water levels. The risk of flooding remained primarily for areas along river channels, low-lying districts, and cities, while in mountainous areas it applied to locations prone to landslides.
Residents and tourists in the central provinces are advised to monitor the latest forecasts, especially when traveling to mountainous areas and on roads running along rivers. During heavy rain, it is also worth considering the possibility of temporary road closures due to flooding or landslides.
