A tourist from China rode a motorcycle onto the national monument on Lishon

The driver ignored the prohibitory signs and continued riding onto the stone arch Cổng Tò Vò, despite attempts by local residents to stop him.

The incident occurred on August 4 on Lý Sơn Island in Quảng Ngãi Province. A Chinese tourist named Zhang Xudong, born in 1990, rode a motorcycle directly onto the stone arch Cổng Tò Vò, which is a national monument. Warning signs had already been installed at the site prohibiting climbing onto the arch, walking on it, or affecting the site in any way.

Witnesses recorded the incident on video and reported the violation to local authorities. According to Tuổi Trẻ, people nearby tried to stop the man and warned him of the danger, but he continued riding along the stone arch.

After receiving the information, staff from Lý Sơn’s culture and social affairs department, together with police and border guards, identified the tourist and summoned him for questioning. At the meeting, the man admitted the violation and explained that he did not know Vietnamese or English and therefore did not understand the content of the warning sign. He also apologized and said that he wanted to get closer to the beautiful spot.

Following the inspection, the authorities drew up a report, conducted an explanatory discussion, and required him to sign a commitment not to repeat the violation. No fine was imposed for this particular case.

Cổng Tò Vò is one of Lý Sơn’s main natural attractions. In September 2025, the stone arch was officially recognized as a national monument of Vietnam. Tourists are now prohibited from climbing onto it, including for photography, as this could damage the natural site and create a safety risk.
