A power bank caught fire on an Air Seoul flight to Da Nang

A fire broke out on a flight operated by South Korean airline Air Seoul from Incheon to Da Nang, allegedly linked to a portable battery. The incident occurred on the evening of September 24 at around 21:00 aboard flight RS511, while the aircraft was still at Incheon International Airport preparing to depart for Vietnam.

Smoke, followed by flames, emerged from one of the passengers’ bags, which was under the seat. A power bank stored in a separate case was found inside the bag. Crew members quickly extinguished the fire, after which firefighters arrived at the aircraft.

At that moment, there were 221 passengers and 7 crew members on board. After the incident, all passengers were evacuated from the plane. Several people complained of breathing difficulties due to the smoke, but no one required hospitalization. There were no injuries as a result of the incident.

Air Seoul decided to replace the aircraft in order to carry out the necessary safety checks. As a result, the flight departed for Da Nang about 2 hours and 50 minutes later than originally scheduled. A total of 219 passengers boarded the replacement aircraft — two others voluntarily declined to continue the journey after the incident.

The preliminary cause of the fire is believed to be the ignition of a portable battery. At the same time, according to South Korean media, the passenger had taken measures to prevent the battery from short-circuiting. Air Seoul and fire authorities are continuing to determine the exact cause of the incident. The airline also stated that it intends to strengthen safety measures following the incident.

The case occurred amid heightened attention from airlines and aviation authorities to the transport of power banks due to the risk of overheating and ignition of lithium batteries. For passengers, this is another reminder of the need to follow the rules for carrying portable batteries and to monitor their condition while traveling.
